Board promotes 226 Immigration, Correctional, NSCDC officers - solacebase.com
226 officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been promoted.
The promotion of the top management officers was disclosed in a statement on Sunday by the Secretary, Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), Mrs Aisha Rufai.
Rufai revealed that the promotion result was approved by the board on May 19, taking into cognisance merit and other considerations such as Federal Character Principle.
According to her, 66 NCoS senior officers were promoted including 23 officers as Assistant Controller General (ACG) and 43 to the rank of Controller of Corrections (CC).

NIS recorded a total of 98 officers: four officers to the rank of Deputy Comptroller General of Immigration (DCGI), 24 to the rank of Assistant Comptroller General of Immigration (ACGI) and 70 to the rank of Comptroller of Immigration (CIS).

A total of 62 NSCDC officers were promoted: five officers to the rank of Deputy Commandant General of Corps (DCG), 22 officers to the rank of Assistant Commandant General of Corps (ACG) and 35 officers to the rank of Commandant of Corps (CC).
She urged the newly promoted officers to continue to contribute their quota towards achieving their mandates and ensuring internal security in the country.
The Secretary said that although the Federal Fire Service (FFS) is a member of the board, the promotion list included no officer of the FFS because their promotion was underway. (NAN)

Ghanaian films not “low grade†- Country Manager of Silverbird Cinemas - Myjoyonline
The Country Manager of Silverbird Cinemas Ghana, Funmi Onuma, has rubbished the negative perception that Ghanaian films are of 'low grade' and not favourably competitive.
According to the country manager, who was speaking with Graphic Showbiz on the patronage of the cinemas after its reopening in July 2021, the erroneous perception has gained roots because of poor sponsorship and lack of investment in the film sector.
Funmi Onuma pointed out that the vibrancy of other film industries had been made possible by rich investments from governments and corporate entities and expressed a hope to witness same support for Ghanaian movie productions.
"It's never true that Ghanaian movies are of low quality or grade and the industry is dying. At least, the number of quality Ghanaian movies premiered at Silverbird Cinemas since the reopening of the cinemas in July last year is proof of that."
"However, what the industry is lacking is the right sponsorship and investment. There's no way a good script can be well interpreted without a good production and that comes with money. But here in Ghana, that support is not so strong and so film producers have no choice but to finance their projects with their own budget," she said.
Funmi Onuma said that she hopes the corporate institutions will see the need to invest in the film industry especially since the industry is showing lots of promise.
President Akufo-Addo announced the opening of cinemas in July last year but the cinemas, including Silverbird, started full operation and occupancy in March this year.
Movies premiered at Silverbird Cinemas since reopening include Aloe Vera, Coming to Africa, Drops of Happiness, Galamsey, God is African, Happy Surprise, Red Carpet, Savannah, Shemale, Terminus, The men we love, The Return of Jamal, Till Sunset, Fifty Fifty and Tito.
Ms Funmi Onuma mentioned The Men We Love, Happy Surprise and Red Carpet as the top three Ghanaian movies that premiered at Silverbird.
"These movies had huge patronage and if truly Ghanaian movies were of low grade, they wouldn't have recorded such high figures. Content wise, Ghanaian movies are changing, and the storylines are changing towards real-life issues that the public can relate to," she explained.
The Country Manager stated that Ghanaians need to believe and not condemn all the potentials the industry is showing.
The devastating effects of Covid-19 on various sectors of the economy cannot be overemphasised. With the creative industry being one of the worst hit, cinemas were not spared of its brazen effects.
Recounting the losses of Silverbird Cinemas, Ms Funmi Onuma disclosed that the cinema lost over $20M in value during the period.
She mentioned that the business is still on a recovery mode because the pandemic caused a major setback including having some of their equipment for operation locked up for many months.
"At one point, products were not even ready to be released onto the market because there were no workers to install the equipment. Most of our products are still in stock and are yet to be sold, causing the industry to suffer greatly," she noted.
Despite the pressing challenges, Funmi Onuma noted that Silverbird Cinemas was preparing to have a fruitful celebration of its 13 years of operation in Ghana.
"We are 13 years in Ghana by November so we have come a long way in supporting the industry to the best we can and hope for more collaborations in future. Again, we are looking at expanding to other locations which is in the pipeline," she said.

Marhakh – the killer in most of transgenders murder cases - The Nation
peshawar – Body of a transgender person lied in a pool of blood at a hospital in Peshawar, with no family member around the body since many such people flee their homes when they cannot find space there due to their gender.
Mano, who belonged to Malakand district, had been living in Peshawar with her community. She was shot dead and later buried in Peshawar, as the relatives did not take the body to their village. Her only mourners with her body were her trans community members.
Mano was reportedly killed by a Marhakh, a term meaning a boyfriend in the community, in Peshawar the other day.
A transgender person, Farzana, said that she fled her home in young age because she could not adjust with her family members.
"When there used to be some ceremony, my family would not take me there because they thought my behaviour was abnormal being a shemale. I could not socialise there. This is why I fled home and later took refuse with a guru," she said.
She said that a guru is an elder who takes care of transgender persons living with him. And in such kind of life, many transgender often become victims of bullets and murders.
Marhakh is mostly involved in the murder cases of transgender persons, according to those privy to the community.
Marhakh can be of two kinds: either he is rich and spends money on a trans person or he can be a poor person depending on the income that a transgender earns through music and dance programmes.
In most cases of murder, a Marhakh has killed a transgender when he sees that she has developed relations with another person, even after he (the killer) had spent money on her needs like makeup, food and others. The killer thinks he is doing the murder "for honour".
In other case when a Marhakh who consumes money from the income of a transgender person can also turn into a killer when he stops receiving money from her.
A female rights activist, wishing anonymity, told The Nation that most of the murder cases occur due to the attitude problem and sour relations between the transgenders and their boyfriends.
"Transgender community have their own language. When they speak, you may not understand their language. And this particular language is transferred orally; there is no book on the trans' language," she added.
She further said that even in the times of the kings, there were trans persons who had the same language they use today. "They use the term 'Marhakh' for boyfriend not just in Pashto but in other languages too. They call Rs100 note a 'Katka', for example," she elaborated.
Recently several transgender persons were shot in Mansehra, Peshawar and other districts and the boyfriends were involved in most of the cases.
